Campaign wants more LGBT representation

Their ipetition has grown to over 25,000 signatures, mostly gathered in the Bay Area and Santa Cruz, and a letter writing campaign addressed to Showtime Entertainment and the production company is already underway.

The efforts were initially met with little notice from the network. Recently, their response has turned full circle as signatures, phone calls and letters flow in with printed copies of the many heartfelt messages to the  entertainment president.

“At least they are now acknowledging that this decision effects a great many people, particularly in the Lesbian community.” Said campaigner Allison DeCosta Whitney, and she then added. “They are seeing that they have some responsibility to explain the decision fully, listen to the feedback and try to make some other efforts or amends to their LGBTQ customers. We love and value the series but there is more than one show at stake in our opinion and we really want to be heard with regard to accurate representation in the media.”

Organizers say many fans of the Showtime drama have no idea that the only significantly "gay" show on mainstream television is about to be canceled. Reactions over Pride weekend included surprise and disappointed and that ever since, the ipetition was flooded with signatures and messages of support.

Recently Whitney read a list of Showtime LGBT friendly shows and mini series - saluting their courage and openness in taking chances - that they have been involved in.

“It was also important to point out that every one of them was now off the air, or scheduled to be, without an attempt at replacement. Considering that there are so many more out gays in the media and entertainment industry, particularly behind the scenes, this back slide is disturbing and confusing.” Said Whiteny

Keep your eyes appealed, organizers promise to continue purchasing ads from the San Francisco Chronicle to  the NY Times and many cities in between featuring the ipetition address for signatures and comments.
